Trauma doesn’t just live in the past; it lives in the nervous system, shaping how people survive, react, and experience the world today. This session empowers you to look beneath "difficult" behaviors to see the protective strategies underneath, giving you the tools to respond with grounding compassion instead of judgment.
This session explores the relationship between trauma and mental health, how past experiences shape thoughts, emotions, behaviour, and wellbeing.
Trauma doesn’t just live in memories; it lives in the body, the nervous system, and in the strategies people use to feel safe or survive. Understanding this connection helps us respond with empathy, curiosity, and compassion rather than judgement.
Many people who experience distress or big emotional swings are not being “difficult” or “unpredictable”, they are responding from a place of protection, overwhelm, or exhaustion. Trauma-informed mental health awareness helps us look beneath behaviour to the needs, stories, and emotions people may be carrying.
In this session, you’ll explore how trauma influences mental health, recognise distress through a compassionate lens, and reflect on your own responses to emotional intensity. You’ll also consider what helps people feel grounded, validated, and safe enough to engage.
This is a self-paced session , you can complete it in your own time, pausing whenever you need to reflect or rest.
By the end of this session, you will be able to:
• Understand how trauma can affect mental health, emotions, and behaviour.
• Recognise signs of distress or dysregulation through a trauma-informed lens.
• Notice how your own emotional responses shape interactions.
• Identify communication and support strategies that promote safety and grounding.
• Take one practical step to strengthen trauma-informed mental health awareness in your role.
