Participation and Co-Production - Level 1

This session explores what it really means to centre people’s voices, experiences, and expertise in the work we do. Participation and co-production aren’t about token gestures or asking people to “feedback” on decisions that have already been made, they are about genuine power-sharing, collaboration, and valuing lived experience as expertise.

For many people, being invited into decision-making spaces can feel unfamiliar or unsafe, especially if trauma or exclusion has shaped their previous experiences with services. Trauma-informed participation acknowledges this reality and focuses on building trust, transparency, and choice.

In this session, you’ll explore what meaningful participation looks like, recognise the difference between involvement and tokenism, and consider how co-production can create more equitable, compassionate systems. You’ll reflect on your own role in creating spaces where people feel heard, respected, and able to influence change.

This is a self-paced session, you can complete it in your own time, pausing whenever you need to reflect, rest, or think more deeply.

By the end of this session, you will be able to:

• Understand the principles of trauma-informed participation and co-production.
• Recognise the barriers people face when invited into decision-making spaces.
• Differentiate between genuine co-production and tokenistic involvement.
• Reflect on your own power, role, and responsibilities in collaborative work.
• Identify one practical step to strengthen participation and co-production in your setting.
