Lisa has had an interest in the long term impact of trauma upon children and young adults for over three decades, focusing firstly as a practitioner, alongside her own recovery journey, then in her research and then moving into supporting and helping practitioners in their own work.

Having completed a Masters looking at the intersection between school exclusion and being a child in care, Lisa completed her Doctorate (DPhil) in January 2024 at the University of Oxford in the Department of Education within the Rees Centre.

The Rees Centre aims to improve policy and practice within child social care and education, producing research evidence aiming to better the life chances and, in particular, educational outcomes of those who are or have been, supported by children’s social care services. 

Lisa’s research in particular looks at the experience of having been in care and/or excluded from school, and how these experiences have been made sense of in adulthood, in relation to ‘belonging.’

In November 2019, Lisa and other industry professionals gave a public lecture for the ‘public lecture series’ on exclusions and reducing the impact, you can watch it here.

This research follows Lisa’s Master's degree from Oxford Brookes University which looked at specific references to education and employment in adulthood for care-experienced adults who were excluded from a school setting.
