GROUP Supervision

A key aspect of Trauma Informed Practice is that staff are supported through good quality Trauma Informed Supervision. Indeed, an organisation or individual should not be calling themselves ‘Trauma Informed’ unless this supervisory relationship is in place. To be working in a Trauma Informed way is to fundamentally respect the need for personal and professional safety; supervision is one way to ensure that this need for safety is facilitated. At TICS we have a range of highly skilled and qualified supervisors who work with individuals and organisations to ensure that both their practice is safe and continues to respect the principles of Trauma Informed Practice, but also that their own well-being is being considered and reflected upon, in order to avoid the risks of vicarious secondary trauma, compassion fatigue and ultimately burnout.

Supervision for individuals or groups working with traumatised individuals or within traumatised or traumatising systems is often provided through TICS by organisations such as Local Authorities, Schools or Charities. But what if your organisation doesn’t offer this type of supervision? We often have individuals contact us saying that they receive management supervision in their role but that this doesn’t provide what they need in terms of personal and professional development and well-being. This type of ‘managerial oversight’ supervision, common in public service areas, often becomes a tick box exercise due to lack of time, resources and sometimes professional knowledge. Furthermore, there are independent practitioners who are working with clients and in need of an educative peer group, facilitated by a qualified practitioner to support them in their work.

One way to access Trauma Informed Supervision if this is not something your organisation is providing, or if you work independently, is to consider monthly online group supervision. TICS run mixed professional groups for both independent practitioners e.g. counsellors, therapists, psychologists, occupational and speech therapists, as well as those employed by organisations that do not offer this level of support, but feel they need it e.g. Teachers, social workers, health professionals etc.

“This is the best supervision group I have ever attended. To be held so safely by like-minded peers has helped me and my practice; to really reflect on what it means to be Trauma Informed and how I can facilitate this in my everyday practice.” Domestic Abuse Caseworker.

“I have found accessing external group supervision so, so helpful. The neutral approach, with no hidden agenda, I feel I can trust you, and feel so safe in the group. I don’t feel judged no matter how silly my question might seem. You facilitate exploration in ways that are so child or client focussed; it has definitely helped me think more holistically. This has made a real difference to me and my work, and my successes with children and families.” Child Therapist.

Recommendation
The supervision that Amelia has offered has been hugely beneficial in supporting not only my own mental and emotional wellbeing, but also in discussing and reflecting on key issues that arise as part of my job role. Amelia provides a relaxed, comfortable environment where key issues, incidents and concerns are addressed and reflected upon through the insightful and thought-provoking discussions that Amelia facilitates. The supervision sessions have certainly had a positive impact on whole school strategies, as well as my emotional wellbeing in terms of having ongoing opportunities to reflect in depth about all aspects of my job role.
