Supporting others shouldn't come at the cost of your own wellbeing, yet the emotional weight of trauma can quietly accumulate over time. This session gives you the tools to identify the early signs of vicarious trauma and build a practical, sustainable plan to protect your emotional safety while staying compassionate in your role.
This self-paced session explores what happens when we carry the emotional weight of other people’s stories, when listening, caring, or supporting begins to take an emotional toll. This is called , and it can quietly build up over time in anyone who works closely with people who have experienced distress, loss, or injustice.
You’ll reflect on what vicarious trauma looks and feels like, recognise early warning signs in yourself and others, and explore how awareness, boundaries, and connection can help you stay grounded. Through real examples and guided activities, you’ll begin creating small, realistic plans to protect your wellbeing and sustain compassion in your work.
Learning is self-paced, you can move through it in your own time, pausing whenever you need to rest or reflect.
By the end of this session, you will be able to:
• Define vicarious trauma and understand how it differs from burnout and compassion fatigue.
• Recognise signs of emotional strain and early indicators of vicarious trauma.
• Identify personal and organisational strategies that protect wellbeing and build resilience.
• Reflect on your own boundaries and support systems.
• Develop one small, realistic action to support your emotional safety at work
