What is Trauma Informed Training Anyway?

In recent years, there has been a growing understanding of the impact of trauma upon a person’s well-being, behaviour and the opportunities they have to thrive in everyday life. As a result, there is an increasing demand for organisations, especially those in education, healthcare, and social services, to adopt trauma informed practices. Trauma Informed Consultancy Services (TICS to you and I!) is at the forefront of this movement, offering specialised training to help organisations not only recognise and address trauma in a way that promotes healing, safety, and resilience for everyone, but also to change the very spaces we operate in so that we can work both preventatively and restoratively.

The training approach itself equips professionals and their communities with the knowledge and skills to understand, recognise, and respond to the effects of trauma. It moves beyond traditional training models, which often focus on technical skills or standard procedures which we still also do, but in addition we also prioritise creating environments where individuals (whether they be staff, clients, students, or patients) feel safe, supported, and empowered.

Trauma is a broad term encompassing a range of adverse experiences, including abuse, neglect, violence, or loss, which can lead to long-term emotional and psychological effects. These effects often manifest as difficulties with emotional regulation, concentration, behaviour, or trust in others. Without a trauma-informed lens, these behaviours may be easily misunderstood as defiance, disengagement, or even aggression, leading to ineffective responses that further exacerbate the trauma and feed a longstanding lack of understanding further.

By undertaking trauma informed training, you will be fundamentally reshaping how you interact as you will leave with:

  • An understanding of the whole person as we consider profoundly the importance of understanding not just behaviour, but also the emotional, psychological, and physical dimensions of well-being. This contrasts with many traditional models that focus on individualised and isolated behaviours, often ignoring the root causes of these behaviors. This means that we can often become trapped in a ‘reactive’ approach which is unlikely to change things in the long run.
  • The skills and tools to work towards a cultural shift. Trauma informed training is not a checklist or a single intervention but something which equips attendees with the fundamentals to contribute towards a systemic change that embeds empathy, patience, and understanding throughout the entire organisation, creating an environment where everyone feels respected and supported.
  • The tools and understanding to work preventatively, not reactively. We consider how to identify and mitigate potential triggers before issues arise. Instead of responding reactively after a situation escalates, professionals learn to create environments that are inherently safer and more supportive, reducing the likelihood of conflict or distress make the space a more pleasant one for everyone.
  • Knowledge of how to meaningfully prioritise building safety and trust. You will be taught safety is not limited to physical terms but it must also be felt on a psychological level.

In our next article, we look at the multifaceted benefits of trauma informed training that go beyond the training itself!
